Vision & Mission Statement

MIAO DANCE‘s vision is to cultivate a culture of appreciation within Singapore for Improvisation and Dance Film, for practitioners and non-practitioners alike. We aim to achieve this through the creation of works, platforms, classes, performances, events and screenings, in which we encourage cross-disciplinary collaborations, including but not limited to dance. Recognizing the individuality that each person brings, we aim to espouse that through experimental play.

Company Programmes

We are a dance company focusing on Improvisation and Dance Film as our niches.

We have been producing QUANDARY, an hour long improvisation jam between one dancer and one musician/sound artist, for the past 3 years, and are now in the tail end of our 3rd Season.

We have been hosting Contact Improvisation (CI) jams for the CI community on a fortnightly basis for the past 2 years, and continue to do so.

We have been hosting IMPINGE, an art/dance film screening, in our space, on a bi-monthly basis for the past 3 years, and continue to do so.

We have been teaching weekly Improvisation and Yoga classes, as well as ad-hoc Dance Film Workshops, in our space for the past two years, and continue to do so.

We have been hosting MIAO MASTER workshops by fellow dance/movement practitioners in the industry on a monthly basis for the past two years, and continue to do so.

We produce our own Improvisation-based performance projects.

We host 3-4 week Residencies for Overseas Artists to incubate ideas and develop their practices, whilst working with them for QUANDARY, MIAO MASTER and other projects that we wish to collaborate on with them.

We organized the inaugural QUARK Sound Improvisation Festival in Nov 2023, which saw 3 nights of 5 musicians per night from our QUANDARY Alumni.
